Door To Hell

Door To Hell

“The Door to Hell”, Derweze, Turkmenistan– Derweze is a small village located in Turkmenistan that is home to about 350 inhabitants; most of which are from the Teke Tribe. Derweze is rich in natural gas. In 1971 the Soviets tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas and the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed. It was decided the best solution to avoid the spread of poisonous gas would be to set it on fire. It still burns to this day and locals have named it, “The Door to Hell”.
